Vogue

The Cover of Vogue

Magazines scatter every aisle of every shopping center hoping to catch your attention with eye popping images. In this particular image that appeared on the cover of Vogue we have a famous celebrity “Posh” covered in sparkling diamonds. When you look at this image you immediately think beautiful, heavenly and wealthy. These are things most people aspire to be. You should also pay particular attention to how light she is being portrayed and how she seems to be glowing. Lighter skin appears to the viewer as being pure and perfect. Many people relate light to angels and angels are beautiful. So in return when we see rays of light shining down on someone or glowing around them you associate it with perfection. Adding diamonds to the photo just heightens the light in the image. The way the diamonds sparkle creates a magical feeling to the viewer. Emphasizing the great significance of light. Even the way we judge a diamond reflects how we feel about clear, bright objects or images. The better the diamond the more translucent and clear it is, it also gives off more light.

Another important aspect of this image is why did they use a Caucasian women why not an African American or Hispanic? The reason to this is because Caucasian women in particular photograph better or easier rather under brighter lights. But there is more to see when looking at this image. The fact that we have a Caucasian women covered in diamonds with bright lights glowing behind her head signifies several different connoted meanings. For example in earlier years the color of your skin could make you a second class citizen. During that time the lighter your skin was the wealthier you must have been because wealthy Caucasians prided themselves on the color of their skin and from not having to do hard labor which would of course darken you skin color. Those types of jobs were for the lower classes and they could not afford the finer things in life. The fact that they are presenting a Caucasian celebrity covered in diamonds signifies the control of the upper class which is mainly Caucasian. This cover is also seen by women of every age and can represent unrealistic body images. Many advertisers do not take into consideration the type of meanings they are creating when publishing images like this one.
